Edward P. Smith, 60, of Kalkaska returned home to be with his Savior on Sunday December 19, 2021. Edward “Ed” was born September 13 to the late Donald William Smith and Dorothea Louise (Pfromm) Smith. , 1961, in Grosse Pointe and grew up on the east side of Detroit.
After graduating from Baptist Academy High School, Roseville, in 1979, he continued his education at Hyles-Anderson College, Crown Point, Indiana and graduated in 1985. Ed moved to northern Michigan in 1988 Edward served the Lord in many areas of Christian ministry. throughout his life. He also graduated in Law Enforcement from NMC, Traverse City, and served in the Kalkaska and Antrim County Sheriff’s Department in a number of roles including that of Naval Officer, Team of diving and detective as a forensic investigator for over 23 years. His most recent degree was in Information Security, Intelligence, and Computer Forensics from Ferris State University.
Ed retired from the Sheriff’s Department in February 2021 and was able to continue and enjoy his passion for scuba diving. He enjoyed working at Scuba North in Traverse City and obtained several diving certifications. He has reached the level of Dive Instructor for PADI, NAUI and SDI. After obtaining his captain’s license, he started his own rental boat business, Great Lakes Scuba, in Mackinaw City. Captain Ed Smith very much enjoyed taking groups of divers, including TV crews, on wrecks and recreational dives in the Straits of Mackinac.
Edward is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Sherrie Lee Smith, of Kalkaska; children, Jonathan (Kelli) Smith, of Fife Lake, Julie (Gavin) Sigler, of Fort Worth, TX, James Smith, of Lake Whitney, TX, Joshua (Claire) Smith, of Decatur, Illinois and Christina Smith, of Traverse City ; He was also fortunate to have 10 grandchildren.
Edward is also survived by his loving mother, Dorothea Smith, of Clinton Township; her uncle, Wilbur Pfromm, of Warren; and four sisters, Sharon (Gary) Hansen, of Traverse City, Linda (Michael) Fontaine, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Susan Boyd, of Shelby Township and Laura (Keith) Salter, of Warren. He was “Uncle Ed” by eight nephews; four nieces; two great-nephews; and four grandnieces.
Edward was predeceased by his father, Donald W. Smith, and his stepdaughter, Emily Scott, who was welcomed into Heaven just two days before him. Edward accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a teenager and was steadfast in his faith. He was a member of New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg. Edward was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by many friends and family. There was a private visitation for the family whose arrangements were entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home.
