STARKVILLE, Mississippi — Don Zant, Mississippi State University vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer, is the recipient of an annual statewide leadership honor by the Mississippi Business Journal.

Zant is one of a group of 20 receiving the MBJ 2021 Leader in Finance Award, which recognizes those who have helped shape the finance, banking and accounting industries in the state. Launched in 2013, nominations for the awards are submitted by the peers of laureates, professional acquaintances and innovators in the financial community.

“We are delighted to be able to recognize so many great financial professionals with this program,” said Tami Jones, editor of MBJ. “These people are at the top of their field and certainly deserve this honor. “

Zant recently led a campus reorganization from the finance and campus services areas into a single cohesive finance and administration division. He supervises the offices which include the comptroller and the treasurer; purchases and contracts; accounts payable; facility management; parking and public transportation services; and control of reception and ownership.

Also managing the administration of planning, design and construction of the university, Zant saw his division organize the inauguration in October of the Richard A. Rula Engineering and Science Complex, valued at $ 34 million, on Hardy Road.

Prior to joining MSU in 1997, he was deputy director of internal audit at Texas Tech University and senior auditor at a private company. He started his MSU role as Director of Internal Audit, was appointed Vice President of Budget and Planning in 2010, and served as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer prior to the 2019 reorganization. Management practices have helped the university maintain a strong financial position, even under difficult circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic. He graduated in Magna Cum Laude Accounting from Lubbock Christian University.
