Charles “Buck” William Clayton

Durham, NC – Charles “Buck” William Clayton, 84, died on December 12, 2021 at Duke University Hospital.
Mr. Clayton was born on May 23, 1937 to the late John William and Tassie Mae Seamster Clayton in Durham. NC. He was a loyal member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, where he was baptized. Mr. Clayton retired as Major of the Durham Police Service in 1991, when he obtained his private investigation license. Buck served as Chief Constable of the Durham Police Department in the Chief’s absence and has served multiple terms as President of the Durham County 20-Year Law Enforcement Club. He was a member of FBI Associates and a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Major Clayton served in the United States Army, where he served in Berlin and Germany with military police as a patrol supervisor. He was a member of the American Legion, as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars. Buck graduated from the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in February 1979 and was a member of the North Carolina Auctioneers Association. The only auction he served as an auctioneer was for charity. Buck loved and cared for his family. He will be sadly missed by all.
In addition to his parents, Buck was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Shepherd; sons, Steven G. Clayton and Tim Anderson; and her sister, Edna Dement.
Buck is survived by his brother, David Clayton (Edna); daughter, Donna Anderson Harris; nephews, Chris Clayton (Dale) and Larry Melton (Angie); nieces, Penny Kendricks (Stacey) and Vivan Thompson, godchildren, Josie and Noah Ferrell; as well as a special friend and caregiver, Donna Gullie; his sons, Robbie Gullie (Lynn) and Jason Gullie (Tammie); his daughter, Sonya Elko (Troy); her grandchildren, Nina Elko, Camden and Sydney Gullie.
The bearers will be Robbie Gullie, Jason Gullie, Camden Gullie, Chris Clayton, Larry Melton and Terry Holbrook. Honorary bearers will be Tony Roop, Durwood Curry, Jimmy Lively, Joey Brooks, Mike Andrews, Worth Hill and the Durham Police Department.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday December 17, 2021 at the Chapel of the Hudson Funeral Home with a visitation 2 hours before from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hudson Funeral Home. Officials will be Chaplain Phil Wiggins and Pastor Tim McCreight. The entombment will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens on Cheek Road in Durham.
