William Reid “Bill” Elliott
February 3, 1932 – December 29, 2021
Macon, Georgia – William Reid “Bill” Elliott, 89, of Macon, walked through the Gates of Heaven on December 29, 2021. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM at the Highland Hills Baptist Church on Sunday January 2, 2022 , with Dr. Jim Bruner as officiant. The family will greet friends an hour before the service in the great hall of the church.
Son of the late William Irby Elliott and Gladys Middlebrooks Elliott, Mr. Elliott was born in Macon, Georgia on February 3, 1932. He attended Bruce Elementary School and graduated from Lanier Boys High School. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology and graduated from Auburn University’s School of Engineering with a BA. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps on the Isle of Paris.
He particularly enjoyed honoring his Scottish heritage by attending the Stone Mountain Games, Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina on several occasions. He has proudly worn his Clan Elliott Kilt on several occasions.
Mr. Elliott has been heavily involved in the USAF’s aircraft structural integrity programs with respect to policies and specifications. He organized and managed the Durability Analysis and Damage Tolerance Engineering group within the Technology and Industry Support Directorate to provide technical support to several aircraft program offices.
Recognizing the need for an engineering school close to and affiliated with Robins Air Force Base, Mr. Elliott advocated for the development of the Mercer University School of Engineering. Having served on the Board of Directors for many years, Mr. Elliott has also defended the Mercer Engineering Research Center.
He was a member of the Mikado Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir as tenor and was acting choir director. He later joined Highland Hill Baptist Church, where he also sang as a tenor in the choir and was a Sunday school teacher.
After his retirement from the public service, Mr. Elliott became active in the Rotary Club of downtown Macon. He served on the design and construction committee for Rotary Park on Riverside Drive.
Mr. Elliott was predeceased by his parents and the mother of three children, Ruth Gregory Elliott.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Harris Butler Elliott; children; Greg Elliott (Cindy), of Macon, GA, Clay Elliott (Leslie), of Macon, GA, and Lisa Shepard (Bruce), of Macon, GA; small children; Catherine Wilson (Casey), of Decatur, GA, Corey Elliott, of Macon, GA, and Hannah Elliott (Fiancé – Josh), of Macon, GA; stepchildren; Nancy Tudor (Dick), from Honolulu, Brad Butler (Tanya), from Gaffney, North Carolina, and Blair Butler (Lisa), from Columbia, Tennessee; step-grandchildren; Laura Lu (Stephen), from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Stephanie Klein (Joe), from Columbus, Ohio, Bradley Butler, from Savannah, GA, Noah Butler, from Atlanta, GA, Seth Butler, from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Tess Butler, of Columbia, Tennessee, and Maggie Shepard, of Woodstock, Georgia; great-grandson, Callum Elliott Wilson; and great-granddaughter, Ruby Lu, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Mr. Elliott at Highland Hills Baptist Church, 1370 Briarcliff Road, Macon, Georgia 31211.
