On September 15, 1931, Clarence and Gussie Fugett welcomed their seventh fifteen-year-old child, Pearlyne Laverne, to their family in Waurika, OK. Part of a church-going family, Pearlyne accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and joined Mount Zion Baptist Church serving in the youth choir under the direction of the late Reverend WE Miner .
The Fugett family eventually moved to Gainesville, Texas in 1947 where Pearlyne attended and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School on May 26, 1950. After moving to Texas in 1947, Pearlyne continued her Christian journey and joined Mt. Olive 1st Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. HE Carbin. After Reverend Carbin’s passing, she also served under Reverend David XL Nicholson, Reverend Phillip J. Butler, Reverend Preston Brown and Reverend JaCoby Ervin. Throughout her 70+ years of being a faithful member of Mt. Olive First Missionary Baptist Church, she has played a major role in many ministries. She was a church clerk for over 20 years and a financial secretary for several years. She served as president of the Women’s Mission and the Cheerful Women’s Mission, which was a subdivision of the Women’s Mission ministry. She also led the banquets and the hospitality committee and was a faithful chorister.
On February 21, 1957, Pearlyne married Walter Laurence and together they raised five children: Sharon, Brent, Marla, Norman and Phyllis in Gainesville until the couple divorced in 1968. While raising and supporting her children, she worked for Ernest & Estelle Beck. , Linda Jo Shoe Factory, Atlanta Life Insurance Co., Weber Aircraft, Gainesville Memorial Hospital and Texas Instruments. Later in life she provided private home care services to Jo Kennedy, Helen Hutchison, Elvis Dustin, Mary Alice Wisdom and Virginia Rivoire.
Today Pearlyne Fugett Laurence celebrates in heaven with her parents and son Sterling Brent Fugett, siblings James Fugett, Carrie Mae Bell, Lee Otis Gipson, Dorothy Jean Boydston, Clarence Fugett, Jr., Ethel Mae Dennis, Verna Williams, paternal grandparents Tamer and Newton Fugett, and maternal grandparents Ethel and Arthur Lowe.
Beloved sister, mother and grandmother, Pearlyne left an indelible impact that her siblings Maurice Crawford, Lois Phelps, Joyce Ricks, Paul Fugett, Michael Fugett, Gerald Fugett and Coy Fugett will remember; children Sharon Fugett, Marla Richardson (Alfred), Norman Laurence (Gayleth), Phyllis Green (Tommy); grandchildren, Chandra Fugett, Craig Fugett, Lacrecia Milam, Shanner Fugett, Tiffani Fugett, Kellie Green (Deon), Amber Richardson, Ashley Richardson, Corey Jones, Ta’Sauna Smith (Kennedy), Jason Marshall, Le’Sean McCullough, Noriece Laurence, Chelsea Green and Bria Green; 22 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives, friends and surrogate children.
Public viewing Friday, September 16 at Mount 1st Baptist Church from 6-8 p.m. Celebration of Life, Saturday, September 17, at First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m.
His precious remains are in the care of Cravens Funeral Home, Sherman, TX. Patrick Cravens, owner.
